A driver is lucky to be alive after a vehicle plunged into the Severn River late Tuesday morning in Ramara Township.
According to Ramara Fire Chief Tony Stong, emergency crews were called to the scene on Rama Road near Somerset Drive just before noon after reports a vehicle went into the water.
Stong said both Ramara Fire and Rescue Services and the Rama Fire Department responded to assist.
When crews arrived, they found the pickup truck submerged under the bridge. The driver - a woman who was the only person in the vehicle - had managed to escape and swim to safety before first responders got there.
Provincial police confirmed the truck did not go over the bridge but instead went down an embankment into the river. The vehicle was later removed from the water.
The driver was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
The cause of the incident has yet to be released. Rama Road, south of Highway 169, was temporarily closed while crews worked to recover the vehicle.
