The Opportunity

Reporting directly to the Fire Chief, this role is responsible for the operation and strategic leadership of the Fire Services Operations Division. The Deputy Fire Chief establishes programs and manages the operational readiness of suppression staff, apparatus, and equipment to ensure efficient and effective fire protection services are provided throughout the Municipality.  Overall, this position plays an integral role as a key member and contributor to the Fire and Emergency Services Leadership Team and is engaged in strategic initiatives across Caledon Fire and Emergency Services.

As the Deputy Fire Chief, Operations & Command you will perform the following duties, including but not limited to:

  • Manage fire department personnel through leadership, evaluation, monitoring, communications, and planning for staff to function safely and effectively, while maintaining effective labour relations to promote and maintain excellent relations with the Association stakeholder.
  • Ensure effective operations of the Fire Suppression and Command Structure, including the preparation of the operational budget for the division, and responsible for the development and implementation of Policies and Procedures for the division. 
  • Directs the deployment of all personnel, equipment, and apparatus for the division to ensure excellent customer service is delivered including the liaison with the Joint Fire Communications Centre
  • Registered Authority for the Driver Certification Program (DCP)
  • Perform the duties of the Fire Chief in their absence and as the Town’s Alternate Community Emergency Management Coordinator
  • Manages the general direction and coordination of the volunteer firefighters and works with the Volunteer District Chiefs to resolve both station and administration matters.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the department’s pre-plan information program for suppression personnel to maintain emergency pre-plan information on designated occupancies.
  • Perform additional duties and undertake special projects as assigned.

The Ideal Candidate

We are seeking an experienced professional with a post-secondary diploma in Business or Public Administration, Fire Services Administration/Management, or other relevant discipline, or equivalent industry training, programs, diplomas, and certifications. Our ideal candidate has a minimum of ten (10) years progressive responsibility in a municipal fire services organization, preferable in a unionized environment and a minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a senior officer with relevant labour relations experience.

Certification to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Officer III Level or equivalent experience. Certification to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Officer IV Level is preferred.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated working knowledge of the existing legislative framework related to municipal operations; administers and enforces acts such as the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, Ontario Fire Code, Provincial Offences Act and Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act. We are seeking an individual with sound knowledge of the principles and practices of effective supervision and administration as it applies to the fire service.

The successful candidate for Deputy Fire Chief, Operations & Command will be required to work a flexible schedule, including in the office, remotely and after hours (as required).

This position offers a salary range of $154,776.02 to $193,470.03 plus a competitive benefit package.

Satisfactory passing of a vulnerable sector check, and proof of qualifications will be required of any successful candidate(s) for this position.
