Deputy Chief, Operations
Job Description
Provide strategic management oversight to the Fire Prevention and Life Safety Section (FP & LS) and Fire Department. Assist the Fire Chief and other Assistant Chiefs with the effective operation of Mississauga Fire & Emergency Services and all emergency and non-emergency services provided to the public.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversees the delivery of services in a manner compliant with applicable corporate policies, established procedures and applicable law;
- Oversees the development, implementation and delivery of training and staff development plans;
- Manage human resources, succession planning and staff development for section;
- Develop and manage finance and budgeting for section;
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to positively influence legislation/policy that impacts programs and services;
- Strategic Planning for the section;
- Manage the activities of assigned staff including staff training, assigning and reviewing assignments and daily work flow and evaluate performance;
- Represent the Mississauga Fire & Emergency Services at various public and private functions and events;
- Assist in labour relations including negotiations, hearing grievances, investigations, discipline, human rights issues, policy development, health and safety, and relationship building with association officials;
- Liaise with other city divisions and business units, customers, stakeholders and the public to build and maintain healthy working relationships;
- Actively participate and/or chair for various boards, committees and meetings involving various levels of government, private sector organizations, stakeholders, customers and the community at large.
Skills and Qualifications
- Post-secondary degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, or Education, combined with a minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in the Fire Service, or an equivalent blend of education and relevant experience;
- In-depth understanding of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) professional standards and the Ontario Fire Marshal and Emergency Management (OFMEM) certification and educational frameworks;
- Demonstrated ability to lead, evaluate, and manage teams, with a proven track record of effective supervision and staff development;
- Exceptional written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to build strong working relationships and deliver high-quality customer service across diverse stakeholder groups;
- Must hold a valid Ontario Driver’s License.
Hourly Rate/Salary: $ 157,986.00 - $ 210,644.00
Hours of Work: 35
