Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Township of Wainfleet is seeking an experienced fire service leader to serve as Deputy Fire Chief. Reporting to the Fire Chief, the Deputy Chief is second-in-command of Wainfleet Fire & Emergency Services and helps lead a volunteer department serving a rural community.

The Deputy Chief supports emergency operations and operational readiness, oversees firefighter training and certification, and provides leadership in fire prevention, public education and community risk reduction. The role also contributes to personnel management, health and safety, budgets, asset planning and implementation of the department’s Master Fire Plan. The successful candidate will respond to incidents, assume command or other incident management roles as required, and act as Fire Chief when delegated. 

TERM: Full-time, 18-month contract
REMUNERATION: $109,529 – 128,133 (2026 Rate)
START DATE: Monday, November 9, 2026

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates should bring:

  • Seven to ten years of progressive firefighting experience, including three to five years as a Captain or other fire officer.
  • Demonstrated leadership and experience in training, personnel management, municipal administration and emergency operations.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable fire service legislation, the Ontario Fire Code and occupational health and safety requirements.
  • NFPA Firefighter I and II, Apparatus with a Pump Operator, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations, Fire Officer II, Fire Service Instructor I, Fire Inspector I, and Fire and Life Safety Public Educator I certifications.
  • A valid Ontario DZ driver’s licence and current first aid, CPR and AED qualifications.

A relevant post-secondary diploma, degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional officer, instructor, inspector, public educator, fire investigation and technical rescue qualifications are assets, as is experience in municipal emergency management. The successful candidate must meet the remaining certification and training requirements set out in the full job description within the specified timelines.

Working Conditions:

  • The Deputy Chief participates in an after-hours on-call schedule and must be available for emergency response, training, meetings and events during evenings and weekends.

Upon appointment, the successful candidate must live within a 30-minute travel time of Wainfleet Central Fire Station, 42143 Highway 3, under normal driving conditions, and maintain that response time throughout employment. A satisfactory driver’s abstract and other Township employment screening requirements apply.
