Two people discovered by firefighters in a burning apartment building on Jane Street building were transported to Belleville General Hospital on Tuesday evening.
After responding to the fire call around 7 p.m., Belleville Fire and Emergency Services firefighters remained on scene of the structure fire in the 100 block of Jane Street in the West Hill into the evening checking for remaining hotspots.
Belleville Deputy Chief Mark Shannon said when firefighters arrived at the scene, “thick black smoke was found coming from a large building divided into three apartments.”
“Firefighters made quick entry and found two victims trapped in the smoke. The victims were removed by firefighters and taken to hospital by Hastings Quinte Paramedics,” he said.
“There is no update on their condition,” he said at the time.
Shannon said Belleville police blocked off Coleman and Jane Street area to keep the vicinity clear for first responders and emergency vehicles.
Residents were asked to avoid the area.
“The fire is under control and firefighters are checking for hot spots. A fire investigator is on scene,” Shannon said.
No damage estimate was available at press time.
The cause of the fire is to be determined by investigators sifting through the debris.
