Location: This position is required to work in person at Fire Head Quarters, 1255 Fairview Street, Burlington. Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands.
Position Overview: This is an exciting opportunity for you to be part of a dynamic fire prevention team with the Burlington Fire Department. This role provides fire prevention inspection and code enforcement for the City of Burlington through proactive and reactive measures fire safety inspections and education.
Responsibilities: As a fire prevention inspector (Assistant to the Fire Marshal) you will conduct fire prevention inspections of all building and occupancy types to ensure compliance with the Ontario Fire Code and other applicable legislation, regulations and municipal by-laws. You will be responsible for conducting complaint and request inspections as well as proactive inspections targeted to reduce risk, preparing orders, reviewing fire safety plans, issuing tickets, initiating prosecutions and giving evidence in court, when needed. You will be required to work with city building and bylaw officials in supporting customer service delivery for the City. The performance of fire investigations involving the determination of origin and cause of fires is a requirement of the position.
Requirements: To meet these challenges, you possess a degree/diploma in the field of fire prevention, protection and/or a related discipline and/or have successfully completed equivalent work experience. Successful completion of courses, such as NFPA 1031 Level 1, NFPA 1031 Level 2, NFPA 1035 Level 1, NFPA 1035 Level 2, NFPA 1033 Level 1 are considered assets. Having a strong working knowledge of the Ontario Fire and Building Codes and an understanding of the technical aspects of sprinkler, standpipe, fire alarm, and voice communication systems, hazardous materials, and other factors relating to fire safety prevention and protection is considered an asset. You must have extensive knowledge of the Ontario Fire Code.
A valid Class G driver’s licence is required with an acceptable driver’s abstract (no more than three (3) driving related convictions or an accumulation of no more than three (3) demerit points in the previous three (3) years prior to the date of hire).
A technical examination will be required as part of the recruitment process.
Police Check Requirement: This position requires the successful candidate to provide a clear criminal record check
and/or a clear criminal record check with a vulnerable sector screening at their own expense.
Salary Range: $71,674 - $129,012
