Job Description

What You Will Do:

  • Conduct comprehensive fire prevention inspections on a request, complaint, or regularly scheduled basis as outlined in the Establishing and Regulating By-law of all assigned building classifications and occupancy types; enforce fire prevention codes and standards, issue orders, testify, and give evidence in court.
  • Record all inspection findings and make recommendations to improve occupant and building safety.
  • Review building fire safety plans, Propane Risk Safety Management Plans, and display fireworks applications.
  • Prepare and implement public fire safety and emergency preparedness education programs for the general public, community groups, schools, and other institutions using a variety of mediums and maintain inventory of materials and library of online content.
  • Collaborate in the development and implementation of public education/fire prevention campaigns for target groups identified in the Community Risk Assessment and Fire Master Plan.
  • Assist in providing training in Fire Prevention and Public Education to Volunteer Firefighters.
  • Conduct and assist in investigations to determine cause and origin of fires.
  • Undertake special projects and perform other duties as assigned in accordance with departmental or corporate objectives.

This position reports to the Fire Prevention Officer or designate.

We are looking for a team player who is enthusiastic, customer service focused and who has the following:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma, or equivalent. Post-secondary education from an accredited university or college in Firefighting, Fire Sciences Technology, or equivalent, an asset.
  • Minimum two (2) years of progressive, related experience in fire service suppression. Experience in fire prevention and public education activities is considered an asset.
  • Certification from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in 1001 Firefighter Level II, required.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-BLS, an asset.
  • Certification in NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector Level I; NFPA 1033 Fire Investigator; NFPA 1035 Fire and Life Safety Educator Level I; or relevant demonstrated experience considered an asset.
  • Good working knowledge of the NFPA Standards, Ontario Fire Code, Fire Protection and Prevention Act, Ontario Building Code, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and WHMIS 2015.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively in a team environment and to exhibit courtesy, tact, and diplomacy in dealing with the public, department officials, and other members of staff. Ability to adhere to confidentiality requirements at all times.
  • Ability to provide a current and acceptable vulnerable sector police record check.
  • A valid Class “G” Ontario Driver’s License in good standing with a current acceptable Driver’s Abstract. A valid Class “DZ” Ontario Driver’s License in good standing, is considered an asset.
  • Pleasure Craft Operator Card, or willingness to obtain, an asset.
