Officials say one person was taken to hospital in stable condition following a suspicious Sunday afternoon fire west of downtown Hamilton.

At approximately 2:06 p.m., the Hamilton Fire Department received a report of a structure fire on Homewood Avenue between Locke Street South and Dundurn Street South.

Fire crews arrived to find heavy black smoke pouring from the third floor and a person hanging out of a second-floor window on the east side of the house.

Firefighters quickly deployed a ladder to the second-floor window and safely brought the person to the ground. The person was then transported to hospital in stable condition.

The blaze was quickly brought under control, but officials say the damage to the home was substantial.

Damage is currently estimated to be around $600,000. No other injuries have been reported.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Hamilton police have been notified as the fire appears to be suspicious.
