Investigators are probing a destructive house fire in Wasaga Beach where officials say a person was found dead inside.
Wasaga Beach Fire Chief Dan Bell told CTV News emergency crews were called to a home on River Road East just before 3:30 Tuesday morning for reports of a fire with someone possibly trapped inside.
Bell said firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of the house and quickly launched an aggressive attack, but were forced to retreat when the roof began to collapse due to the intense heat.
Once the fire was under control, the chief said crews conducted a secondary search of the home and found a man’s body in one of the bedrooms.
The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office is at the scene investigating the cause of the fire.
Bell said preliminary reports suggest smoke alarms did not sound during the fire. No firefighters were injured.
Damage to the home is estimated at $600,000. The identity of the deceased has not been released.
