North York apartment fire sends 5 people to hospital, including 3 kids and firefighter

Five people were transported to hospital – including three children and a firefighter – after a fire broke out at a four-storey apartment building in the Downsview area late Monday night.

Crews were called to a building on Keele Street, south of Sheppard Avenue West, around 11:40 p.m.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke pouring from a fourth-floor unit.

Toronto Paramedic Services said they transported a woman to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. They said they also transported 3 children to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, along with one firefighter who sustained minor injuries.

Toronto Fire said the blaze was extinguished within 30 minutes and was contained to a single unit.

Firefighters remain on scene to watch for hot spots and are expected to remain at the building for 24 hours to monitor the scene.

There’s no word yet as to the cause of the blaze.
