Position Summary
Reporting to the Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief provides leadership to support the effective and efficient delivery of Fire Services for the Town. The Deputy Fire Chief supports departmental planning, operations, and administration, ensuring services are delivered in compliance with legislation, Council-approved policies, and strategic priorities. Acting as the Fire Chief’s designate, the Deputy Fire Chief provides operational and strategic leadership in a unionized environment, with responsibility for training, paid per call firefighter recruitment and retention, operational readiness, health and safety, and emergency response. The position exercises Incident Command during emergency operations, supports capital and operating budget oversight, ensures compliance with applicable legislation, and assumes full authority of the Chief Fire Official in the absence of the Fire Chief.
What you will need:
- Successful completion of formal education in a professional fire services field, including Ontario Fire College, with all components of the Company Officer Program completed. NFPA 1021 (Fire Officer Professional Qualifications) or equivalent.
- Training Officer Program certification in accordance with NFPA 1041 or equivalent.
- NFPA 1072, NFPA 1001, 1031, 1033 1035, 1521 considered an asset.
- CEMC certification is considered an asset.
- Ontario Fire Administration Inc. (OFAI) certifications or equivalent, as applicable.
- Grade 12 diploma is required; a post‑secondary degree in Fire Services Administration, Emergency Management, Public Administration, or a related field is preferred.
- A minimum of seven (7) years of progressive experience in the fire service profession, including at least five (5) years in a senior officer or supervisory role.
- Demonstrated experience in incident command, training program delivery, emergency operations, and leadership / oversite of both career and Paid Per Call firefighters.
- Experience supporting budget development, operational planning, and compliance with applicable provincial legislation and standards is considered an asset.
- Demonstrated leadership, judgment, and decision making skills to effectively direct operations in both emergency and non emergency situations
- Advanced competency in incident command, operational readiness, and emergency response within a municipal fire service
- Demonstrated experience in labour relations, including collective agreement interpretation grievance management and fostering positive union-management relationships.
- Strong working knowledge of applicable legislation, including the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, Ontario Fire Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and Section 21 Guidelines
- Ability to support strategic and operational planning, service delivery improvements, and Fire Master Plan implementation
- Experience managing resources responsibly, including personnel, training programs, apparatus, facilities, and equipment
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare reports, provide briefings, and build productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Proficiency in Microsoft office suite, RMS software and other workplace technology.

What we offer:
This is a full-time permanent opportunity with the Town. The salary range for this role is $115,749.00 - $135,404.13 (2026 Rate – under review).
