It is with heartfelt sadness that the family of DONALD JOSEPH MACARTHUR announces his passing in his 73rd year on Saturday, January 24, 2026 in the early morning hours with his beloved wife of 53 ½ years, Annette at his side after a long courageous battle with an incurable disease, Progressive Supra-Nuclear Palsy (PSP).
Don was born Wednesday, March 5, 1952 in Marathon, Ontario. In 1972 he married his high school sweetheart Annette (née Chiasson) and was blessed with 53 and a half years together and 3 children. Don was known for many great achievements and the hobbies he loved. Don was proud of the community of Marathon and served as Fire Chief of both the Town and Mill. Don received the Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal from the Governor General of Canada, along with many other awards for his services.
When Don wasn’t working or serving the community, he enjoyed many activities and hobbies. He loved the game of hockey and played as a goaltender as well as serving as Referee in Chief. Don was an avid hunter and fisherman. He most enjoyed spending quality family time at the cottage on White Lake, especially when the grandkids were there to “convince” Papa to take them by pontoon boat to Clay Bay!
Don was predeceased by his parents Everett “Mac” and Martha (nee Shearer) MacArthur, in-laws Raymond and Armadine Chiasson. Don was the third of seven children. Roy (Ros), Gail (Kaz) , Lois (Tony), Craig (Heidi), Trudy (Sheldon) and Wanda. As well as many nieces and nephews. Don is survived and will be lovingly remembered and missed by his children, Travis (Kandi), Stephanie (Greg) and Brett (Kirsten). One of Don’s favourite roles was Papa, and loved his 9 grandchildren; Brandi (Adrian), Taylor (Layton), Becky (Devin), Olivia, Abby, Bella, Chloe, Ivy & Alex. He also loved his 5 great grandchildren Trinity, Wyatt, Rosy, Kaleb and Hannah. He will also be missed dearly by his loyal and caring dog Ranger and his two buddies Rocky & Hemi.
A celebration of Don’s life will be held at a later date, with details to be announced. Don will be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humour, his dedication to his community and most of all the AMAZING Husband, Father, Brother, Grandfather and Great Grandfather he was.
We will miss you Don, Wolfy, Dad, Papa, Chief
Thank you to Dr. Sarah Newbery, Dr. Sayali Tadwalkar, nurses and PSWs, and hospital staff, as well as the friends who visited and cared for Don both at home and in the hospital.
