A stretch of Highway 17 near Kenora was temporarily closed Wednesday afternoon after a tractor-trailer caught fire.
Ontario Provincial Police said they responded to reports of the blaze around 2:30 p.m. near Bee Lake. The truck driver managed to exit the vehicle safely and was not injured.
Officials say strong winds helped the fire spread quickly, causing the tractor portion of the truck to become fully engulfed in flames. The trailer was carrying Styrofoam, but firefighters were able to put out the fire before the load caught fire.
The Machin Fire Department extinguished the blaze, preventing it from spreading further. Because thick black smoke reduced visibility in the area, both eastbound and westbound lanes of Highway 17 were closed for several hours.
The highway has since reopened, and police say there is no indication of foul play.
