Timmins awards contract for the design of new fire hall

The City of Timmins is moving forward with plans to build a new fire hall for the Timmins Fire Department.

Meeting this week, city council has awarded a four-year contract for architectural and engineering services to Salter Pilon Architecture Inc. in the amount of $1,871,560.

The new fire hall will help address operational and infrastructure challenges at the city’s existing facility on Cedar Street, which was built in 1957.

Outdated layout

The old hall is too small and has “an outdated layout that restricts the department’s ability to add and deploy critical firefighting vehicles and equipment,” the release said.

“A new fire hall will help the Timmins Fire Department meet the growing needs of the community and continue to deliver high-quality emergency services,” Fire chief Scott Atkinson said in the release.

The new facility will include a dedicated training space, modern ventilation and decontamination areas to protect firefighter health.

Work on the hall will begin this year, including site selection, design and tendering the construction contract.

The city hopes to open the new station sometime in 2028.
