The South Bruce Peninsula Fire Department is not cold-calling area residents to solicit donations.
The fire department issued a statement on the matter on Wednesday after learning scammers had been posing as department officials asking for $500 donations. The fraudulent callers requested the funds be given through credit cards or e-transfers.
"The South Bruce Peninsula Fire Department does NOT solicit donations by phone and would never ask residents for money in this way," the fire department said in a statement. "Fundraising efforts have only ever involved partnerships with local community businesses."
OPP have been notified about the scam and are investigating.
Anyone who receives a call asking for donations to the fire department are advised not to provide any personal or financial information and should just hang-up. The call can then be reported to the OPP non-emergency line at 1-888-310-1122 or to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
