Ottawa Fire Services contain garage fire in west end of Ottawa

Ottawa firefighters contained and extinguished a fire in a detached garage in Ottawa’s west end on Saturday.

Ottawa Fires Services public information officer Nick DeFazio says firefighters responded to reports of a fire in a detached garage very near to a home in the 900 block of Winnington Avenue at approximately 12:45 p.m.

Two vehicles were parked in the garage and flames were and a large column of black smoke was visible from several blocks away, DeFazio says.

“Flames were most intense on the side of the garage closest to the home,” DeFazio said.

Crews searched the garage and home to ensure there were no occupants inside, and crews used chainsaws to cut through the garage door to reach the interior.

The fire was declared under control at 1:04 p.m., though radiant heat from the fire caused several windows on the home to shatter.

There were no injuries, DeFazio says, and the family was able to return to their home as the fire had not spread there from the garage.
