There was significant smoke and flames visible from a house in the 100 block of Wellington Street when firefighters arrived at around 10 a.m.
Crews were able to contain the blaze, the fire department said in a news release.
PUC Services and police officers attended the scene.
“Due to significant structural damage, fire investigators were unable to enter the dwelling. At this time, the cause of the fire is undetermined,” the fire department said.
"This could change in the coming days or remain undetermined due to damage of the structure," said Aaron Gravelle, public education officer with Sault Fire Services.
There were no injuries reported.
The house took extensive damage from fire and smoke.

Firefighters are currently working to extinguish a blaze at a home at the corner of Wellington Street West and Brown Street.
Four pumper trucks are on scene with two command units and police officers.
Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services asked the public to avoid the area at this time.
