More than 20 people rescued after ice shelf detaches from Georgian Bay

OPP are only reporting minor injuries after a extensive rescue mission that saw 23 people stranded on an ice shelf on Georgian Bay.

OPP from the Grey-Bruce detachment got the call on Sunday and say the ice shelf detached and floated about two kilometres away. It split into several sections and some people became partially submerged in the frigid water.

Emergency responders including police, fire fighters, paramedics and Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources attended the scene and a nearby golf course opened for aviation units and triage response.

By around 2:30 p.m., all 23 people were safety airlifted back to shore. All of the rescued people are expected to make a full recovery.
