Malfunctioning appliance to blame for south London house fire

Working smoke alarms are credited with crews arriving in time to prevent a fire from spreading beyond the kitchen of a south London home on Tuesday.

According to a social media post, members of the London Fire Department responded to the 40-block of Masson Court Tuesday afternoon following a report of a small kitchen fire.

London fire says crews were able to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading beyond the kitchen.

All occupants of the home were able to escape safely.

One minor injury was treated at the scene.

London fire says a malfunctioning appliance is believed to be the cause.

Damage is estimated at $75,000.

“Working smoke alarms save lives,” London fire said. “They alert you of fire early giving you time to escape.”
