An elderly woman has died and two others have been hospitalized following a residential fire in Newmarket, Ont., early Friday morning.
Emergency crews responded to the scene around 6:36 a.m. near Kirby Crescent and Alex Doner Road. A total of seven fire trucks, 28 firefighters and a Chief officer arrived in the area.
Upon arrival, crews confirmed an active fire and initiated an offensive strategy, deploying hose lines and a search and rescue.
Police confirmed that one woman was transported to Southlake Hospital in life-threatening condition. She has since succumbed to her injuries. Two men were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Officials say one firefighter was assessed at the scene and released.
Central York Fire Services and York Regional Police remain on scene as the investigation continues throughout the day.
Road closures are in effect around Kirby Crescent and Alex Doner Road. Drivers are being asked by police to avoid the area. It is unclear when the roads will reopen.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Police say the Office of the Fire Marshal has been called in.
