Damage is estimated to exceed $500,000 after fire tore through a house just south of downtown early Friday, London Fire Department officials say.
It was shortly after 1:30 a.m. when officials say firefighters were called to the 300 block of Grey Street for a structure fire. That’s located in an area just south of the Wellington Street-Horton Street intersection. Crews were met with “heavy smoke and fire” upon arriving and “did an offensive attack until command pulled them out due to deteriorating conditions of the building,” officials said.
A “defensive aerial operation” followed, officials said. Photos posted to social media by the London Fire Department show crews at a single-family home, its exterior appearing to have sustained significant damage from the blaze.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation on Friday morning, officials said, adding that the damage was estimated to be more than $500,000. As of shortly after 6 a.m., firefighters were no longer at the scene, fire officials said.
