A house sustained heavy damage following a fire in Cobourg on Tuesday, April 21, 2026.
At approximately 1:50 p.m., the Cobourg Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire on George Street, just north of Orange Street, after numerous calls reported smoke and flames coming from the residence.
Acting Fire Chief Kevin Ashfield said crews encountered heavy smoke coming from all sides of the two-storey home upon arrival.
Firefighters made a quick entry and were able to knock down the flames, which were primarily located on the main floor.
“They knocked the fire down fairly quickly. The next crew did a search of the structure and no occupants were found in the house,” said Ashfield.
During the search, firefighters located several dogs and cats inside the residence and brought them outside in an effort to save them.
“There were some pets found in the house. Our crews brought them outside. We used our oxygen and equipment to see if we could revive them.”
Despite their efforts, several of the animals died due to smoke inhalation.
Ashfield noted the fire may have been burning for some time, as no one was home when it started.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
