One person is dead and four others are in the hospital after a fire broke out at an apartment in Mississauga’s Cooksville area on Tuesday afternoon.
Peel police said fire crews responded to a building near North Service Road and Asta Drive, west of Cawthra Road, shortly before 12:50 p.m.
Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) Platoon Chief Ryan Baird told CTV News Toronto crews encountered heavy smoke and flames in a unit on the first floor.
“They quickly were able to bring the fire under control. They did find one person in the fire unit who was removed without vital signs,” Baird said.
Police have confirmed the person was pronounced dead.
Peel paramedics told CTV News Toronto that four people were hospitalized, mostly with injuries related to smoke inhalation.
Baird said the building was evacuated, and crews are monitoring air quality before letting residents back in.
The fire has since been knocked down.
The cause, origin, and circumstances of the blaze are unknown.
“At this time, there is no indication that the incident is suspicious in nature. Mississauga Fire is leading the investigation, and we are assisting as needed,” Peel police said in an email to CTV News Toronto, noting that MFES will contact the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal.
