Training Officer
Fire Department
Milton Fire and Rescue Services is currently accepting applications for the full-time unionized position of Training Officer.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Division Chief of Training, this position assists with research, development, planning, delivery and facilitation of Fire Service training programs to Emergency Operations personnel as to provide comprehensive professional development related to technical knowledge, skill and abilities in the course of performing their duties effectively and efficiently. Participate in the day-to-day activities and programs of the Training Division.
Key Responsibilities
Administrative Duties
- Comply with and enforce applicable Acts, Rules and Regulations, standard operating procedures and guidelines
- Develop and prepare lesson plans
- Develop and prepare training calendars and schedules
- Utilize Learning Management Software (Vector Solutions)
- Stay informed of all developments in Fire Service operations, fire training education, fire service advancement, technological improvements and new procedures through the participation of in courses, seminars, conferences, etc.
Training
- Assists in coordinating, overseeing and training of recruit classes
- Ensures ongoing quality of training methods, instructional techniques and materials to meet emerging best practices in adult education
Evaluation and Improvement
- Conduct and assist in the evaluation of a variety of training programs such as Emergency Vehicle Operations, Incident Management System, Firefighting operations, Hazardous Materials operations, Technical Rescue operations and Emergency Patient Care operations and recommendations necessary changes
- Continually assesses the effectiveness of current training using learning checks and feedback to meet the needs of learners
- Assist in developing and conducting written and practical assessment evaluations and examinations for the hiring of new staff and promotional processes as required by the Division Chief
- Ensure that public relations and public fire and life-safety education efforts are supported and promoted
Research and Development
- Conduct, research, develop and prepare teaching plans
- Recommend program and procedure improvements relating to training requirements and contribute to the development and updating of Standard Operating Policies and Guidelines to enhance training and operational efficiencies
- Assists in recommendations for equipment and materials purchases
- Serve on MFRS committees as assigned
Program Management
- Assists with annual review and revision of training programs and materials to ensure SOG’s are in compliance with current legislation and evolving trends
- Assist with the development and submission of training goals and objectives and the annual training plan to the Division Chief of Training for approval
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- Minimum five (5) years’ experience in fire suppression
- Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills
Certifications and Designations
- NFPA 1001 Firefighter I & II (Pro Board, IFSAC or OFMEM equivalency)
- NFPA 1072 HazMat Awareness (Pro Board, IFSAC or OFMEM equivalency)
- Valid “D” Driver’s License with a “Z” endorsement
- Current CPR/First Aid
Preferred Qualifications
Education
- Post-Secondary Degree/Diploma in Fire Sciences/Technology/Pre-Service
- Post-Secondary Degree/Diploma in adult education or other relevant discipline
Experience
- Demonstrated presentation and demonstration skills (i.e. creating lesson plans, skills sheets)
- Knowledge in developing and writing lesson plans and presentations using formal adult learning methods of instruction
- Mechanical experience and aptitude
- Extensive knowledge of firefighting and rescue operations
Certifications and Designations
- NFPA 1002 Pump Operations (Pro Board, IFSAC or OFMEM equivalency)
- NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Level I (Pro Board, IFSAC or OFMEM equivalency)
- NFPA 1041 Instructor Level I (Pro Board, IFSAC or OFMEM equivalency)
- NFPA 1521 Incident Safety Officer (Pro Board, IFSAC or OFMEM equivalency)
- Blue Card Incident Command Training
- Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
- Emergency Medical Care Attendant (EMCA)
Additional Skills
- Maintains knowledge of and competency of the Fire Service, Acts and Regulations, Policies, Guidelines and other directives as they pertain to day-to-day operations

General Information
- Salary Range: $64,836 - $117,883 – effective March 1st, 2023 as per the current Collective Agreement.
- 40 hour work week, it is understood that occasional evening and weekend work is required and the successful candidate must have flexibility with respect to hours of work.
