Driver hurt after dump truck rolls down 40-foot embankment in Ottawa’s west end

A dump truck driver was treated for injuries after the vehicle dropped 40 feet down an embankment and landed on its side in Ottawa’s west end on Tuesday.

The Ottawa Fire Services says firefighters responded to a call for assistance from paramedics at 8:30 a.m., reporting a vehicle went down an embankment and became trapped between two sand banks in the 4000 block of March Road.

Ottawa Fire Services public information officer Nick DeFazio said the large earth-moving truck went off the embankment, rolled over and came to rest on its side. The driver was able to get out of the vehicle but could not climb back up to the ground level due to the extent of his injuries.

DeFazio said the Rope Rescue teams were dispatched to assist with the operation.

“Rope Rescue personnel constructed a twin-tension, steep-angle rope system, and a litter with three rescuers descended the muddy embankment,” DeFazio said. “A litter basket was used to secure the patient, and a 3:1 haul system was set up to safely raise the patient to ground level.”

The patient was transferred to paramedics for treatment. An Ottawa paramedic spokesperson said a man was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, and transported to hospital by Lanark paramedics in stable condition.
