TRAINING OFFICER
(PERMANENT, FULL-TIME) - FILE #2026-33
Our Human Resources Department is currently accepting applications for the permanent full-time position of Training Officer. Reporting to the Fire Chief or Designate, the Training Officer is responsible for the planning, development, coordination, delivery, and evaluation of all departmental training programs for firefighters and officers. The Training Officer ensures training programs meet legislative requirements, departmental operational guidelines, and recognized industry standards. The role supports firefighter competency, operational readiness, and organizational development through structured training, evaluation, and continuous improvement.
The Training Officer will also support the administration of departmental compliance programs and will respond as the Incident Safety Officer to major incidents (confirmed structure fires or large-scale events that require multiple station response).
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- Minimum Grade 12 diploma or equivalent, required.
- Minimum five (5) years’ experience as a full-time suppression firefighter or seven (7) years as a volunteer firefighter for Prince Edward County Fire Rescue or another fire department, required.
- Demonstrated success as a Fire Instructor, with strong knowledge of the principles of adult education, techniques of instruction and new technologies in firefighting, fire prevention and equipment, required.
- NFPA 1001 Firefighter Certification, required.
- NFPA 1041 (Fire Instructor) Level II or the ability and willingness to attain within a six-month period from date of hire, is required.
- NFPA 1041 (Fire Instructor) Level I and NFPA 1021 (Fire Officer) Level I, required.
- NFPA 1006 Surface Water Technician, Ice Water Technician and Common Passenger Vehicle Technician certifications required (within a one-year period from date of hire).
- NFPA 1521 (ISO) certification, an asset.
- NFPA 1002 (Pump Operations), an asset.
- Sound working knowledge of relevant legislation, including but not limited to: the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, National Fire Protection Association standards, etc.
- Strong knowledge of modern firefighting, related emergency services and fire prevention methods, techniques and procedures and the operation and maintenance of apparatus and equipment.
- Highly developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish effective working relationships, excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and coaching capabilities.
- Strong level of Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel) required.
- Experience with learning management software is an asset.
- Valid First Aid Training & CPR certificate; EFR or instructor certification considered an asset.
- Valid Class 'D' Ontario Driver's License with an air brake (Z) endorsement.
- Ability to provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check.
The annual salary for this position is $118,596.64 as per the current wage schedule of the IAFF Local 2745 Collective Agreement. Compensation also includes a competitive benefit package and membership in OMERS, a defined benefit pension plan.
