Reporting to the Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief is a member of the Town’s Extended Management Team and is responsible for the daily activities and efficient operations of a composite Fire and Emergency Services department, which includes full-time and paid on-call firefighters, inspectors, training, and education staff.
This role calls for political acuity and the exercise of independent judgment within the established policies, procedures industry standards, and best practices, and requires the use of good judgment in emergency situations. The Deputy Fire Chief shares in the responsibility of overseeing the department branches.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for operations and fosters a culture of belonging within the department.
- Provide leadership and strategic direction to the East Gwillimbury Fire and Emergency Services through planning, management, budgeting and administration of major initiatives.
- Supervise emergency scenes (as required) to ensure all Officers and Firefighters operate in a manner consistent with established guidelines and accepted firefighting practices.
- Discharge the duties and responsibilities of the Incident Commander at major emergency scenes and other incidents as required.
- Work collaboratively with the East Gwillimbury Professional Fire Fighters Association including participating in Labour Management Committee meetings, grievance procedures and collective bargaining.
- Ensure appropriate interpretation and application of legislation such as the Fire Protection and Prevention Act and other applicable codes, regulations and municipal bylaws.
- Develop, update, and maintain standard operating procedures for the department.
- Oversee the management and maintenance of Department vehicles and equipment.
- Assume duties and responsibilities of the Fire Chief in their absence and enforce fire service legislation and regulations such as the Ontario Fire Code, the Fire Protection and Prevention Act and the Ontario Building Code.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of experience at a senior level along with a Post-Secondary Degree or equivalency in emergency management, fire protection, fire sciences, public or business administration, leadership or related field. Other requirements include:
- NFPA Standard 1001 – Firefighter I and II.
- NFPA Standard 1041 – Fire Instructor I and II.
- NFPA Standard 1021 – Fire Officer ll.
- NFPA Standard 1033 – Investigation, considered an asset.
- NFPA Standard 1031 – Inspection, considered an asset.
- The incumbent must provide a Vulnerable Sector Check.
- The incumbent must provide a clean Driver’s Abstract.
- Standard First Aid Level C and CPR.
Salary Range: $135,008 - $158,829 (Band 11)
