Windsor house fire leaves 4 with 'serious injuries' and leads to one arrest: officials

A Monday morning fire at a small home in Sandwich has left four people with serious injuries, Windsor police say — and one of them has been arrested.

Two of the people — including the suspect — have since been sent to a hospital in Hamilton for additional care, officials say.

Windsor Fire and Rescue Services initially said at around 8:30 am that one person was reported to be trapped in the Bloomfield Road home, while two others were being treated for burns.

Roughly 10 minutes later, the fire service said four occupants of the home were being treated for injuries and that multiple emergency vehicles were on the scene. Crews then brought the four people to hospital, the fire service said on social media.

"All four individuals found inside the home were taken to hospital with serious injuries," the Windsor Police Service said in a statement early Monday afternoon. "One of them, a 35-year-old man, was arrested at the scene and remains in medical care under police custody."

Police have not yet said what charges the man faces or released his identity. A spokesperson confirmed, however, that the suspect was one of the two people sent to Hamilton for care.

Hamilton General Hospital is home to a regional burn centre.

Windsor Fire and Rescue Services said the blaze caused around $50,000 in damages and that the police's arson unit is investigating along with the Ontario fire marshal.

WFRS said at around 1:15 p.m. Monday that the investigation into the cause and origin of the fire was ongoing, and that no more updates were expected until Tuesday.

Windsor police said Bloomfield Road, which was closed between Prince Road and Watkins Street for several hours, has since re-opened.
