Weekend fires prompt safety reminders from Sarnia Fire Rescue

Sarnia Fire Rescue is issuing some safety tips after a pair of fires over the weekend.

Firefighters responded to a home on John Street near Devine Street at around 6 p.m. Saturday.

Chief Fire Prevention Officer Pete Aalbers said an electric blanket in the living room overheated, sparking the blaze.

"Be careful when using electrical items in the home," said Aalbers. "Electric items and appliances generate heat, and storing them on soft surfaces, the heat does not get a chance to escape and it can cause a fire."

Nobody was home at the time and no injuries were reported.

Damage was estimated at about $40,000.

On Sunday at around noon, crews responded to a fire on Davis Street.

Aalbers said the blaze started in a wood stove chimney. He said the resident, after attempting to extinguish the fire on his own, was able to escape safely.

"It's very important when you have a wood fireplace or wood stove of any sort to have it inspected regularly," said Aalbers. "WETT (Wood Energy Technology Transfer) Certified Inspectors will make sure your chimneys are clean, your insulation is proper, and helps prevent fires."

Damage in the Davis Street fire was estimated between $10,000 and $15,000.

Aalbers is also reminding homeowners to ensure there are working smoke alarms and CO detectors on every storey of the home.
