The Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department is urging residents and visitors to exercise caution when burning outdoors. With the risk of wildfires looming large, the department has outlined the top three things you need to know to stay safe and avoid hefty fines.
First: Daytime burning is strictly prohibited from April 1 to October 31.
“Fires are only allowed between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. during this period. No exceptions,” said Grant Murchison, the department’s fire prevention officer, in a video posted to social media on Wednesday, adding the timeline reduces the risk of fires spreading.
Second: When burning outdoors, keep your fires small.
Fires should be no larger than 2x2 feet and at least 20 feet away from anything that can burn, including your home, propane tanks and vehicles.
Only burn clean, dry wood to minimize the risk of sparks and embers igniting nearby flammable materials.
“Have water nearby and never leave a fire unattended,” Murchison continued. Avoid burning garbage, yard waste, or construction materials, he added.
Finally, pay attention to fire bans.
“Here in Muskoka, we monitor wildfire risks,” the fire prevention officer said, emphasizing that an extreme fire rating also means no fireworks, along with no open-air burning at any time.
Ignoring these bans can result in severe fines, not to mention putting yourself and others at risk.
“The risk of wildfires is very real in our area,” Murchison concluded.
