Thinking cottage campfire this weekend? Muskoka under high fire danger rating

CTV News

If you were planning to have a campfire at the cottage this weekend, here’s what the fire department wants you to know.

Muskoka’s fire danger rating is currently set to high. This means that fires are allowed in most areas, but burning is not permitted during the day.

Bonfires and other open flames are allowed between the hours of 6 p.m. and 8 a.m.

“You must have adequate tools and water to extinguish the fire if the need arises and you must be with your fire at all times,” states the department on its website. “Ensure any campfires are fully extinguished.”

Recent weather conditions across the region have left the land in dry shape, increasing the risk of ignition from even a small spark.

Officials say non-recreational burning is still allowed, but they strongly discourage it while the rating remains in effect.

The fire danger rating is determined using an internationally recognized Fire Weather Index system (FWI), which considers factors like temperature, humidity, rainfall and wind conditions to assess wildfire risk.

It is made in consultation with the fire chiefs of the six area municipalities and the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Residents are also reminded to check with their local municipality for specific outdoor burning bylaws and bans.
