On Monday afternoon, London Firefighters battled a smokey blaze that destroyed a garage and damaged the adjacent home on Brian Avenue.
Heat and flames from the garage fire melted siding on the second storey of the home and allowed smoke to fill the attic.
Neighbours are credited with alerting residents inside the home before firefighters arrived.
“I’m happy to report that there were no injuries to the community or our firefighters,” Evans said.
“Everybody did a great job. Neighbors jumped in and alerted the homeowners (and) by calling 9-1-1. So great on the community and the neighbors for preventing this from being a worse incident.”
Residents of the house will not be able to return until it has been deemed safe.
“There’s extensive damage to the garage and rear of the house,” explained District Chief Randy Evans.
“We had to open up the roof line, and there’s extensive smoke damage throughout the residence as well.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
No damage estimate has been released.
Evans praised the work of several new firefighters who were part of the response.
“We had some brand-new recruits fresh out of training as of last Friday. This is their first day on the truck. So, they got some experience on their first day- and they did a great job,” said Evans.
