Local emergency responders were dispatched to a rural property Tuesday morning, April 14, after a veterinarian was injured when a cow fell on her.

Just before 8:40 a.m., firefighters from the Mississippi Mills Fire Department Station 1 responded to a medical assist call at an address on County Road 29 South in Almonte.

“Yes, the cow did fall on the woman — the veterinarian,” Fire Chief Mike Williams told Inside Ottawa Valley. “This is our understanding based on witnesses who were there.”

Paramedics from the Lanark County Paramedic Service had already arrived at the scene by the time the firefighters got there.

“When we arrived, the cow was already up,” Williams said. “So, we assisted the paramedics in carrying the woman from the barn to the ambulance.”

The woman was taken to hospital.

“She was conscious and talking,” Williams indicated. “She was in stable condition.”

The fire chief was unable to provide details regarding the exact severity of her leg injury.

However, he noted the situation “could have been very serious.”

Firefighters remained on scene for approximately 20 minutes to support EMS.

“This is a first for me,” Williams remarked. “We usually do not receive these kinds of calls.”

According to the Canadian Cattle Association, mature cows generally weigh between 1,200 and 1,600 pounds, although this can vary significantly depending on the breed, gender, and intended use.
