Gamers are gearing up for a 24-hour video game marathon this weekend in support of the Papineau-Cameron Fire Department.
Video game enthusiasts sign up, raise funds for the cause, then gather on Saturday, October 4, at the Papineau-Cameron Fire Hall for an epic day-long marathon gaming event. Participants bring their own computers or gaming systems and can delve into their favourite titles and enjoy the company of fellow gamers.
Mike Guay is hosting the event, and he’s no stranger to organizing 24-hour video game epics. He has been doing it for about 13 years, and he finds it’s a great way to raise money for local causes.
“We do this to raise funds for charity,” Guay explained. “Last year we did one for the food bank, and we’ve raised funds for a children’s program in town, so we try to help wherever it’s needed.” He also said the event gives youth and the young at heart something fun to do. “The event draws a lot of regulars, and we usually have a full house.”
Asked how strong the broadband is at the Fire Hall, Guay said it is equipped with a Starlink connection, and the connection is strong enough to fuel all of the participants’ gaming action. That said, Guay asks players to ensure their games are downloaded and updated before bringing them to the event.
Guay expects there will be room for 35-40 players at the Fire Hall. As for why Guay chose the Papineau-Cameron Fire Department, he said, “Well, I just joined them. I’ve been volunteering for about a month now, so that’s why I wanted to do some fundraising."
Most gamers will bring their computers for playing, but Guay noted that a few also bring game consoles. This weekend, Guay plans to bring out his old Commodore 64 for the occasion and the original Nintendo system. “There’s still a lot of the old systems out there.”
Guay also plans to have some tournaments over the 24-hour period, most likely involving Mario Kart. There will be prizes for the tournaments and draws throughout the night as well.
Registration for the gaming marathon is free, but Guay asks that you have at least $40 pledged to participate. If 25 hours is too much for you, you can still take part in the daytime event, with a minimum of $20 pledged. The event begins on October 4th at noon.
