Firefighters put out a balcony fire in Ottawa’s Sandy Hill neighbourhood Saturday afternoon.
A news release from the Ottawa Fire Services says they received multiple 911 calls reporting black smoke and flames visible from the second floor of an apartment building in the 200 block of Wilbrod Street at about 1:15 p.m.
Firefighters brought additional resources to the scene and began a “fast attack” on the smoke and flames. A hose line was also advanced inside the building.
The heavy response required police to close King Edward Avenue between Laurier Avenue to Rideau Street while firefighters battled the fire. Roads in the area had reopened by about 3:40 p.m.
Two full searches of the structure found no occupants inside, Ottawa fire says.
A spokesperson for the Ottawa Paramedic Service says emergency crews responded to the scene but reported no injuries.
The fire was declared under control shortly before 2 p.m.
High pressurized fans were used to ventilate the residual smoke from the structure.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
