Fire destroys Villa Nova Motel in Wasaga Beach Area 1, nearly $2M in damages

CTV News

A fire late Monday night caused extensive damage to a two-storey motel in Beach 1 area of Wasaga Beach.

Emergency crews were called just before midnight to 45 Mosley Street, the site of the Villa Nova Motel Resort. When firefighters arrived, flames had already spread through a large section of the building’s second floor.

The blaze destroyed a portion of the upper level, leaving the motel uninhabitable. Early estimates place the damage at nearly $2 million.

Officials say four people were inside the building at the time of the fire and were able to evacuate safely. Several pets were also rescued from the motel during the early stages of the incident by police officers and paramedics.

There were no injuries reported.

Fire officials told CTV News one volunteer firefighter suffered an ankle injury while responding and was taken to hospital as a precaution. He has since been treated and released.

The Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified and will decide whether to attend the scene.

Officials say it is too early to determine what caused the late-night blaze.

Craig Williams, Wasaga Beach’s Fire Chief and General Manager of Community Services, said more information about the cause of the fire is expected once investigators have had a chance to assess the incident Tuesday.
