Students at Confederation Secondary School are back in class after being diverted to a nearby school early this morning following the detection of a gas odour.

A spokesperson for Rainbow District School Board said in an email that an odour of gas was detected at Confederation early on March 23.

Staff greeted students outside as they arrived at school. Out of caution, students and staff were relocated to nearby École Jean-Paul II while members of the facilities department determined the source of the smell.

The gas was turned off, the board said, and a contractor was called in to assess the situation.

Greater Sudbury Fire Services was also dispatched to the school to conduct air quality testing.

Students and staff returned to Confederation Secondary School at approximately 10 a.m. when Greater Sudbury Fire Services advised that it was safe to do so, said the email from the Rainbow board.

A contractor remains on site to complete a repair.

The rooftop gas units have been turned off and the school is being heated by boilers.

“We would like to thank Greater Sudbury Fire Services for conducting air quality tests to ensure the safe return to school,” said the email from the board.

“We also extend our gratitude to École Jean-Paul II for accommodating the staff and students of Confederation Secondary School. Safety, as always, is our first and foremost priority. Updates were sent to parents/guardians this morning.”
