$800K fire damages Cambridge townhouse, one person injured

An overnight fire caused more than $800,000 in damage to a townhouse on Fairgreen Close in Cambridge.

Emergency crews were called to the blaze around 1 a.m., where they found heavy fire conditions impacting one of the units. Five fire stations responded.

Eric Yates, a spokesperson for Cambridge Fire, said all four people inside the home managed to get out safely.

“Upon arrival, there was heavy smoke and flames showing from the garage area so crews made entry for a quick attack and suppression of the fire,” he said. “It started inside the family home from what we can tell.”

Earlier information from fire officials indicated one person had suffered minor burns and an infant had been evaluated by medical personnel and found to be in stable condition.

Some nearby residents were treated on scene by paramedics. None were taken to hospital.

“The fire was contained to the home,” Yates said. “The other neighbouring occupants in the adjoining homes were able to access their homes.”

Nearby residents also stepped in to help.

“I was inside playing games and I heard a commotion,” said Jordan Snow. “I ran upstairs and saw my mom run out and we hustled in some kids that were part of the family. From there, I took care of the kids for a bit, made sure they had clothes, at least blankets, food and water, something to try to keep them calm.”

Snow, who lives with his mom, said they were happy to open their home to the family and help in any way they could.

“It’s just what we do as good neighours,” he said. “We come together...especially in a tragedy like this, you want to make sure that you help out and have a good community and know that you have people behind you to protect you.”

Yates said the fire is not considered suspicious, and neither police nor the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office are involved in the investigation.

Investigators are calling it a significant fire. The Fire Prevention Unit remains on scene to determine the cause.

Yates said smoke alarms were working inside the home.

Snow said his mom has started a fundraising page on Facebook to help the family.

GoFundMe has also been created for the family, with a goal of raising $7,500.
