Arson unit investigating fires at 2 magic mushroom shops in Ottawa

CBC News

Ottawa police are investigating fires at two illegal magic mushroom shops that broke out within 15 minutes of each other Monday morning.

Ottawa firefighters were called to the first blaze on Rideau Street near Dalhousie Street around 4:45 a.m. Police said a vehicle had crashed into a business and ignited, setting fire to the building.

Firefighters entered the building and managed to control the flames, protecting neighbouring structures.

Meanwhile, first responders received another 911 call about a fire on Preston Street south of Highway 417. When fire crews arrived they found the building's rear porch engulfed in flames that reached the roof.

Firefighters had the second fire under control within an hour.

Police said both fires are considered suspicious. The Ottawa Police Service's arson and explosion unit is investigating.

A firefighter suffered a minor injury battling the Rideau Street blaze, but there were no other injuries reported.

The Rideau Street location is listed on the website of Shroomyz, which says it's a magic mushroom dispensary with 11 locations across Ontario.

The Preston Street scene is next to another address on the Shroomyz website.

Shroomyz has not responded to CBC's request for comment.

The production, sale and possession of psilocybin mushrooms is against the law in Canada, but the shops have been sprouting up across the country regardless.

Some shops in Toronto have also caught fire and had vehicles crash into them in recent months.
