Ottawa firefighters douse blaze at storage unit on Bentley Avenue

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) says several units at a storage facility on Bentley Avenue went up in flames early Saturday morning.

An individual driving past the scene called 9-1-1 at around 4:28 a.m. to report flames coming from a storage unit, OFS public information officer Nick DeFazio said.

When firefighters arrived, they found the fire had spread to five units in a 12-unit row. Firefighters forced entry through the front gates to get into the facility and used axes to create openings in the units to apply water.

Some of the flammable items stored in the units presented a hazard to firefighters, OFS said in a news release.

“Construction gaps at the tops of dividing walls allowed both smoke and fire to spread rapidly, but the quick response and efficient work prevented the flames from consuming the entire row of units,” DeFazio said.

The fire was declared under control at 5:35 a.m. No one has been reported hurt.
