The Township of Muskoka Lakes (“Township”) is proud to announce that the Muskoka Lakes Fire Department has been officially accredited by the Fire Underwriters Survey for the delivery of Superior Tanker Shuttle Service (“STSS”), a recognized equivalency to municipal hydrant protection for rural areas.
This accreditation signifies that the Muskoka Lakes Fire Department has demonstrated exceptional capability in providing reliable and effective water supply operations in areas without hydrant infrastructure. To achieve STSS accreditation, fire departments must design, document, and test their water delivery systems and prove they can sustain high-volume water flow rates that meet or exceed criteria typically associated with hydrant-serviced communities.
“This accreditation is an important step in strengthening fire protection services across Muskoka Lakes,” said Fire Chief Ryan Murrell. “By continuing to invest in firefighter training and response capabilities, we’re enhancing our ability to meet the needs of residents, both today and as our community continues to grow. Protecting the people and places of Muskoka Lakes will always be at the heart of what we do.”
What this means for property owners
Property owners in rural areas of Muskoka Lakes may be eligible for reduced property insurance rates, similar to those in communities with hydrant-based systems, provided they are within the approved distances of a fire station and water supply source as recognized by their insurer.
Those interested are encouraged to contact their insurance provider to explore potential insurance benefits associated with the accreditation.
