Four escape morning apartment fire in Timmins

CTV News

Four people escaped mostly unharmed after an early morning fire at a three-unit apartment building on Elm Street South on Thursday.

The Timmins Fire Department responded to the structure fire just after 7 a.m. on Feb. 5. Crews from Stations 5 and 3 arrived to find light smoke visible from the rear of the building.

Firefighters determined the source was a burning mattress in the basement. Crews quickly extinguished the blaze and removed the mattress, preventing any fire spread to the rest of the building.

Occupants assessed, released

The four individuals home at the time were able to safely evacuate the building before crews arrived.

“All were assessed by Cochrane District Paramedic Services for minor smoke inhalation and released without further care,” said Deputy Fire Chief Scott Foster.

Safety reminder issued

The fire department used the incident to issue a safety reminder to residents, urging them to ensure working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are installed on every level of their home.

“Most importantly, when a fire is detected, get out and stay out,” said the fire service.
