Damage is said to be extensive in a house fire in Corunna early Wednesday morning.

St. Clair Township Firefighters from four stations responded to a single-storey house fire on Cameron Street at around 12:45 a.m.

Fire Chief Richard Boyes said the house was unoccupied when they arrived, and no injuries were reported.

He said when firefighters arrived on scene, flames could be seen on the exterior west side of the home.

"The fire started on the outside of the house, breached the window, and then travelled through the interior of the structure," said Boyes.

About 30 firefighters were on scene in extremely challenging conditions.

"The cold, the wind and of course as the water was deployed the ice," said Boyes. "Just treacherous working conditions, but fortunately no firefighters were injured."

Damage is estimated at around $250,000.

Boyes said due to the considerable damage, the cause will go down as undetermined.

"The house has received extensive damage, and we're not sure if it will have to be demolished or repaired, that will be up to the homeowner," he said.
