The Ontario Fire Marshal and Cornwall Fire Services investigators, in coordination with Cornwall Police Service, are investigating the cause of a fire at a four-unit residential building at 31 John St. January 1.

Displaced residents are receiving assistance from the Red Cross.

The call was received at approximately 5:51 p.m. and involved a four-unit residential building.

Fire crews faced extremely challenging conditions, with temperatures near -20°C and icy surfaces impacting firefighting operations and safety, says the City of Cornwall. Despite these obstacles and the advanced state of the fire upon arrival, firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the blaze, which was reported at 5:51 p.m., the city says.

Some 34 firefighters and two aerial trucks, four pumpers and six additional apparatus were involved. “This was an extremely challenging incident given the severe weather and icy conditions,” said Matthew Stephenson, Deputy CAO and Chief of Cornwall Fire Services. “Our firefighters demonstrated incredible professionalism and dedication under very difficult circumstances, and I am proud of their efforts to protect lives and property.”

Chief Stephenson added, “This incident is a strong reminder for everyone in our community to ensure that their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are installed and in good working order. These devices save lives by providing early warning in the event of a fire or hazardous situation.”
