Everyone got out safe, including the pets, after a fire at a residential apartment in downtown Stratford on Friday.

Stratford Fire Chief Neil Anderson said an alarm was received at 1:52 p.m. and fire fighters arrived at 383 Ontario Street to find smoke showing from the roof and fire coming from one side of the third floor of the multi-unit housing building.

An agent was applied to the exterior staircase and decking of Unit 5, where the fire originated.

Anderson said the fire was quickly and efficiently knocked down and some of the siding of the building was removed to ensure that there were no fire extensions.

Fire Dispatch had initially reported a case of smoke inhalation by an occupant of the building, but Anderson said nobody presented themselves to paramedics.

No injuries were reported to occupants, pets, or firefighters.

Cause of the fire is undetermined but not suspicious. A company was contacted to secure and protect the building and victim services tended to the occupant of the unit in question.

Other units were tested for air quality and occupants were permitted to return to their units.

Anderson said estimated damage has not been calculated and there is more follow up to come with the insurance company.
