Crews battle fire at Windsor industrial site

Windsor fire crews responded to a large fire at an industrial business on Tuesday evening.

Around 6 p.m., crews responded to the 3900 block of North Service Road East, which sits just off the E.C. Row Expressway, near Central Avenue.

Jamie Waffle, chief of Windsor Fire and Rescue Services, told CTV News the fire occurred at a concrete facility.

“They arrived to find heavy fire conditions with a vehicle fire, just to the side of the building,” Waffle said.

The fire required a sizeable response that included between eight and 10 Windsor fire vehicles.

Crews have the fire under control, but Waffle expected some firefighters to remain on scene to continue addressing remaining hotspots that risk re-igniting the fire.

“Sometimes with these larger-scale fires, you know, fire gets into void spaces, potentially into the ceilings or the rooftop or the walls and sometimes those become a little bit difficult to pull them apart and get to them in order to completely mitigate the fire,” Waffle noted.

Nobody was injured in the fire, and the cause remains under investigation.

Large plumes of smoke could be seen rising over the E.C Row Expressway.

During the response, WFRS posted to social media that crews were working to prevent the fire from spreading to a diesel tank and other hazards on site.

Industrial settings, Waffle added, can present added risks due to the potential hazards on-site.

“There’s always the risk of potential chemicals, propane tanks or acetylene tanks. So, yeah, we certainly were using caution,” Waffle said.

“At this point, we don’t know if any of those things have been involved, but those are certainly precautions we take.”
