Condolences and support have been offered by the municipality after a tragic house fire in Courtice Sunday that left one person dead.
Fire crews responded to the residential fire on Nash Road, near Varcoe Road at approximately 10:37 p.m., Durham Regional Police said. After some initial trouble getting into the home because of the conditions, firefighters discovered one person dead inside.
“We’re deeply saddened as a community after losing a Courtice resident in Sunday’s house fire. On behalf of Clarington Council, I want to share our heartfelt condolences and support with the family, friends, and everyone grieving this loss,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster. “We’re also thinking of our firefighters, who put so much on the line and are feeling this tragedy profoundly. As a community, Clarington stands together with everyone affected by this heartbreaking event.
“This is a sobering reminder for all of us about the importance of early fire detection. Every second counts during a fire; please ensure you have working smoke alarms for your family’s safety.”
Police closed Nash Road between Varcoe Road and Centerfield Drive on Sunday night and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified and is investigating.
