Amherstburg’s new fire hall opening date pushed to next year

Amherstburg’s new fire hall was supposed to open by the end of the month, but now the new opening day is pushed to next year, according to the fire chief.

“We’ve had some issues with weather over the winter. We lost a lot of days and key days. So there was some construction issues with the footings,” said Michael Mio, Amherstburg Fire Chief.

The new opening day is now scheduled for sometime in March 2026. Mio said the project is currently in the midst of finishing the footings and getting walls poured. Despite the delay, he says the budget remains the same.

According to the chief, tariffs are another part of the problem. A new fire truck, with a price tag of $3.1 million, has been delayed.

“It’s a three year build time, and we’re already experiencing delays. There are severe labor issues. There’s material available issues,” said Mio.

Mio says the wait is worth it, as the firehall will bring four fire trucks and an emergency operations centre. “We’re bringing the fire prevention, training and administration all under one roof.”
