Two large dogs died after a fire broke out in a townhome in west-end fire Wednesday morning.

Ottawa Fire Services public information officer Nick DeFazio says firefighters were called to a home on Draper Avenue, near Greenbank Road, at around 8:51 a.m. when a neighbour reported seeing the end unit filling with smoke.

The fire was found in the kitchen. During a search of the home, firefighters found two unresponsive dogs, each weighing around 100 pounds and brought them outside.

“Both animals were removed, and immediate lifesaving efforts were initiated by firefighters outside, including CPR and oxygen administration. Despite these efforts, both dogs unfortunately succumbed to their injuries,” DeFazio said.

The fire was contained to the kitchen and declared under control at 9:27 a.m. High-pressure ventilation fans were used to clear residual smoke.

DeFazio said an adult and two children have been displaced and Victim Assistance was dispatched to aid them.

What started the fire remains under investigation.

This is the second fire in as many days that has taken the lives of family pets. On Tuesday, three cats and a dog died in a fire on Dieppe Street in Vanier. Both fires also come after a man in his 70s died following a fire in Hintonburg on Sunday.
