Job Description

Position Overview
Under the general direction and supervision of the Chief Mechanical Officer, the Fire Department Mechanic will perform skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of emergency vehicles and related equipment. Will be able to work directly and collaboratively with other Mechanics to facilitate completion of repairs to vehicles and other equipment.

This is a full-time position that may be subject to layoff upon the return of the incumbent.

Responsibilities

Technical Duties:

  • Carries out preventive maintenance inspections, procedures, servicing, and performs periodic mandatory commercial vehicle inspections (PMCVl's).
  • Duties may include dismantling, inspecting, diagnosing, cleaning, repairing, overhauling, replacing, installing, maintaining, assembling, lubricating and/or adjusting diesel and gasoline powered equipment; gasoline, diesel, engines; cooling and exhaust systems; gasoline and diesel fuel systems; hydraulic systems; air supply systems; air and hydraulic brake systems; Alison automatic transmissions; drive lines; suspension and steering systems; starting and charging systems; electrical systems; heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems; tires, wheels and rims; differentials; axles; springs; fluid drives; etc.
  • Inspects, diagnoses, repairs, replaces, overhauls, adjusts and maintains emergency lighting systems, starting motors, generators, alternators, and any other auxiliary parts of diesel, gasoline powered engines and equipment.
  • Inspects, diagnoses, cleans, repairs, overhauls and tests fire pumps and related equipment to meet the Underwriters Laboratory of Canada (ULC) performance standard.
  • Inspects, diagnoses, cleans, repairs, overhauls and tests fire aerial devices and related equipment to meet the ULC performance standard.
  • Uses laptop computer for troubleshooting mechanical issues along with other diagnostic equipment.
  • Designs, fabricates, and fits parts, components and assemblies.
  • Repairs firefighting equipment and related appliances.

On Site Repairs:

  • Performs diagnostics/repairs on scene of emergencies, as required.
  • Performs diagnostics/repairs while at a mobile/different location (breakdowns), as required.

Training:

  • Provide guidance to Firefighters on day-to-day maintenance and inspection of certain equipment and parts of vehicles/fire apparatus.

Records Management:

  • Reviews and records all maintenance performed on vehicles.
  • Records and requests vehicle parts from external agencies.
  • Records time logs for accountability and maintenance purposes.
  • As needed, requests on time delivery of parts in consultation with Chief Mechanical Officer.

Other Duties:

  • Performs other related tasks and projects as assigned, which are in accordance with job responsibilities or necessary department and corporate objectives.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulation sand the Corporate Health and Safety policy and all Corporate policies and related procedures.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarian Disability Act (AODA) and related policy and procedures.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum of three (3) years' experience in associated field. Extensive experience in the area of heavy vehicle repair.
  • Experience in the area of hydraulics mechanics.
  • Possesses a current Provincial Certificate of Qualification for Truck & Coach Technician.
  • Current and valid Certificate of Qualification (Ontario) Truck & Coach Technician (310-T).
  • Valid Ontario Class "D" Driver's License with "Z" air brake endorsement, in good standing, with access to a reliable vehicle for corporate use.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the required duties of Fire Department Mechanic and to work outside in- varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to accurately diagnose and solve mechanical problems.
  • Familiarity with workshop safety.
  • Ability to maintain vehicle and maintenance records in a computerized environment.
  • Ability to work effectively under stressful conditions.
  • Good oral and written communication skills, keyboarding skills, and a working knowledge of basic computer programming.
  • Ability to learn and use a computerized inventory management system/program.
  • Excellent customer service skills when dealing with the public, fire services, and other staff.
  • Ability to work in a diverse and inclusive work environment.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage competing demands and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated commitment to personal and professional development and in continuing education through ongoing learning.
  • Knowledge of welding and fabrication.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Multiplex electrical systems.
  • Demonstrated fire services operations, emergency vehicle/fire truck knowledge.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated ability in the City’s core competencies as well as relevant departmental functional competencies.
  • Ability to travel within and outside the country for educational or operational purposes, as required.
  • Previous fire apparatus maintenance experience would be considered an asset.
  • CPR and Standard First Aid Certificates considered an asset.
  • A current Provincial Certificate of Qualification for Automotive Service Technician (310-S) is preferred
  • Successful candidate(s) will be required to submit a clear Vulnerable Sector Check from an accredited Police Service, prior to commencing employment.
  • Successful candidate(s) will be required to submit a current driver’s abstract, prior to commencing employment.

Required to work 42 hours a week Monday to Friday with potential of overtime callback on weekends. May be required to commute and work at multiple locations. Exposure to seasonal/environmental elements, heat, cold, noise and vehicle fumes. Will require the use of applicable protective equipment.
